ThinkFire Establishes Patent Brokerage Division

IPFrontline

Clinton, NJ, October 3, 2005, ThinkFire, the leading intellectual property advisor to information and communication technology companies worldwide, announced today that it has created a division to assist clients with the purchase and sale of patents.

"Businesses recognize it is necessary to re-balance their patent portfolios periodically to respond to the changing market and patent landscape," said Tom Reynolds, Vice President and General Counsel of ThinkFire and formerly Director of Patents at Intel. "Our brokerage services help this process discretely and efficiently."

"Relying solely on internal patent generation to provide a portfolio able to achieve maximum freedom of action, whether for existing or emerging products, has become increasingly difficult," stated Peter Spours, ThinkFire's London-based Executive Vice President and former Head of Licensing for BT Group. "Companies in Europe, Asia and North America are now seeking additional patents to enhance their portfolios. Many are also selling patents to raise funds for further research or to buy alternative patents."

ThinkFire's patent brokerage division builds on its success in patent sales and acquisitions over the last two years. Earlier this year, ThinkFire concluded a sale of key communications patents for a Global 100 corporation, achieving nearly $20 million for the patent owner and providing the purchasers with important patents that enhanced their portfolios.

ThinkFire employs in-depth analysis for patent purchases and sales. Using its technologists, patent attorneys and market analysts, ThinkFire analyzes each patent and provides insight into possible infringement. This enables prospective purchasers to better understand the offensive and defensive uses – and thereby the value -- of the patents. This approach has been proven to command much higher prices than other techniques which lack such detailed engineering, legal, and market analyses.

ThinkFire currently is engaged in several patent sales and acquisitions, including one involving satellite-related data transmissions (including news feeds) that support the cable television, media, and broadcast industries.

"We are seeking purchasers wishing to gain competitive position in the industry or freedom of action," stated Kathie Lusardi, ThinkFire's Vice President responsible for this patent sale. "We are also exploring a shared purchase by multiple companies which would decrease their individual costs, while providing immunity with respect to the acquired patents from a patent 'troll' who may otherwise have strong incentive to purchase and enforce the patents."
